The Benefits Of Mulch And How To Use It In Your Garden

By Linda Peppin Mulching is the application of organic matter on any exposed soil between plants and shrubs and should be carried out while the soil is warm and moist. Benefits of Mulching Retaining moisture A good layer of garden compost or well-rotted mature will keep the soil below cool and moist and therefore help retain moisture. Never mulch on top of dry soil as it may stop rainwater soaking in. Suppressing weeds A layer of mulch will exclude light and therefore stop weed seeds germinating. However, you must ensure that the ground is weed free before you mulch as it does not actually stop the weeds from growing. Improving the soil The mulch will eventually be dragged down into the soil by worms thereby adding goodness to the lower levels of the soil. This is sometimes known as the “no dig” technique for soil improvement. Types of Mulch Manure Fresh manure releases ammonia which can scorch or kill plants, therefore, should be kept for six months before being used so that it rots down sufficiently. Don’t keep it too long though as you will find all the nutrients will have been washed out by the rain. Leaf Mould Leaf Mould is just well rotted leaves but it makes a wonderful mulch. Just collect fallen leaves during the Autumn, pack into black plastic bags, make some holes in the bags to allow rain water to escape and leave to rot down for 2-3 years. Mushroom Compost Mushroom compost tends to be alkaline due to the chalk used in the casing material but if you live in a mushroom growing area it can be a good source of organic matter. It is especially good for acid soils. Chipped Bark Chipped Bark is good for mulching but composted bark is excellent for soil improvement. Garden Compost Your own garden compost is rich in nutrients and is one of the best soil improvers there is so use it as a mulch every year to get the benefits. Peat Peat used to be the main soil improver for gardeners but in recent years more and more people are realising the damage peat-extraction is making to wetland areas so it is best avoided. Hypertension, An Alternative Approach

By Dr. N. Rowan Richards For many years high blood pressure has been defined based upon actuarial tables prepared by life insurance companies. By that definition, blood pressure of 140/90 is borderline hypertension in a person 40 years of age. The suppressed fact is that blood pressure should rise by 5 points for every decade of life. Therefore, 145/95 is borderline hypertension in a person of 50 years old; 150/100, in a person 60 years of age, etc. However, that standard is almost never applied in prescribing high blood pressure medications. Recently, a new standard is being applied: 120/80 (for years the gold standard in blood pressure) has been redefined as “pre-hypertension,” with the recommendation that medication be prescribed. And, there is no allowance for increasing age. So, we see headlines such as “Hypertension - An Emerging Epidemic” on WebMD. Another very important fact is that most primary hypertension is diagnosed as “idiopathic,” which basically means the doctors do not know what’s causing it. We’ve had a variety of medical recommendations for years, but the overall impact has been minimal (as evidenced by the statistic in paragraph 1, above). These recommendations include: 1) drug therapy, 2) exercise, 3) dietary restrictions on salt and fat, 4) weight loss, and 5)avoidance of drugs, including tobacco and caffeine. The medical point of view is that lifestyle changes are inadequate.2 I would like to share with you the basic mechanism of “essential” or “idiopathic” hypertension. These terms are applied to primary hypertension unrelated to an underlying disease of the kidney or diabetes. Essential hypertension is the body’s physiologic response to insuring an adequate blood supply to the brain. For a moment, we need to digress so that you have a picture of how the circulatory system for the brain works. Inside the cranial vault, the blood reaches the brain through the carotid and vertebral arteries. It is drained out into the jugular vein through a system of sinuses which are actually formed by the meningeal membranes. The meningeal membranes (or dura) are the fibrous structures which separate the lobes of the brain and actually give the brain its shape. They include the falx cerebri (which divides the two cerebral hemispheres), the tentorium cerebelli (which separates the cerebellum from the occipital lobe of the cerebral hemispheres), the falx cerebelli (which divides the cerebellar hemispheres) and the diaphragma sellae (which covers the depression in the skull in which the pituitary resides).3 {You may visit my website RichardsFamilyHealth.com and view the articles on “Cranial” to view a cross section of these structures.} Being membranous, the dura is affected by distortions in the cranial vault, resulting in twisting of the sinuses and restriction of the outflow of blood from the brain. Therefore, to bring in more fresh blood and oxygen, higher peripheral pressure is required to force through the blockage. While in school, I was privileged to see a dissection of an unpreserved cadaver, demonstrating the lines of stress in the dura due to cranial distortions. Strokes may occur when the cranium shifts, suddenly allowing a surge of high pressure through the fragile capillaries in the brain. Interesting confirmation of this mechanism comes from veterinary medicine. A giraffe has a peripheral blood pressure of about 350/300 in order to get blood to the brain. Yet, their intracranial pressure is very similar to humans. They also have a specialized vascular structure at the base of their brain to compensate for changes in pressure as they raise and lower their heads while feeding and drinking. The critical point is that the higher pressure is necessary to pump the blood up into the brain. So, the question becomes: What can be done about essential hypertension? Probably the most effective way to control it is through cranial adjusting, restoring normal motion to the cranial vault and removing the restrictions which cause the pressure to rise. I have spoken to many alternative health practitioners, and the consensus of opinion is that the effect of herbal interventions is minimal, compared to the benefits of cranial adjusting. As an added benefit, cranial therapy is completely free of side effects! {See my article on the side effects of high blood pressure medications at www.richardsfamilyhealth.com).} Of course, if there is underlying pathology, either diabetes or renal disease, that process needs to be addressed as well. In many instances, that means herbal therapy or nutritional supplements. The Endless World of Relationship Advice

By Morgan Hamilton There seems to be no limit to the amount of relationship advice that is out there in this day and age. A lot of folks feel insecure about their relationships and from time to time, they need to get help for their relationship woes. Advices on relationships are no longer limited to family and friends because there are many different sources for them these days. Relationship advice can now be found in magazine columns, radio shows, posts on the Internet, and in many other places. However, all relationship advice are not good, even if there are more sources than ever. The more experts there are on love advice, the lower the quality of it in general. The point is that you have to choose the advice for your relationship carefully. This is because many people are making a living out of telling others what to do on their relationships for entertainment purposes. It matters little whether the relationship advice they give even works in the long run for these so-called experts. The people they give dating advice to will not likely be on their shows again. Even if they will be, they will only be on television when the relationship advice succeeds. This means that the viewer cannot really determine whether the experts give sound advice or not. Advice on relationship that is available on the web is even trickier. This is because the services offering free relationship advice may have some other agenda. It may be a religious agenda, such as spreading conservative Christianity. It may also be to sell something, such as a self-help book, subscription to some mailing list, or psychological services. It can be hard to see the point of all of this relationship advice. It can be useful to ask an outside expert if you do not have good friends to ask. If you have dating friends, then you can just get advice from them. This way you will know the quality of the advice that you will receive. Morgan Hamilton offers expert advice and great tips regarding all aspects concerning Relationship Advice. Bridal Registry

By Max Bellamy Bridal registries are services offered by department stores to allow engaged couples to choose the gifts they will receive at their wedding. Couples can draft a list of items that they would like to receive from what is offered at the store. This list is provided to wedding guests so that the desired number of each gift is ordered or purchased and the guests can avoid duplication. Some methods allow several participating stores to provide the list to guests. When a guest purchases a gift, the department store’s list is restructured and the article is removed from the list of preferred items. This prevents a single gift from being unintentionally bought by several people. A bridal registry is effective both for the couple to be married and for guests who no longer need to be apprehensive over what to buy. Department stores can be very efficient and offer an exceedingly individual experience for the bride, groom and registry buyers. Bridal registries give free of charge consultations in person, over the phone or via Internet to brides and grooms. This helps them decide on the items they want and select items according to taste and home decor planning needs. Services may include importing items directly from the manufacturer, offering considerable cost savings for couples and visitors. If another guest has previously purchased an item, stores provide options of issuing a gift certificate or the ability to notify the guest and offer counseling in selecting a new item. The concept of a bridal registry is at times, looked upon as offensive, predominantly by guests of older generations. It is looked upon as asking for gifts and is seen as walking all over traditional gift buying habits. Detractors also say that the element of surprise is lost and it turns gift buying into a competition, as the couple knows prices of the presents received. The use of bridal registries has increased, nonetheless, as has the controversial practice of couples asking guests to give them money instead of gifts. In spite of these issues, bridal registries have become popular amongst modern couples, as they are practical in nature and save time spent returning unwanted gifts. Depression Series: Why Don’t I Respond to Medications? (Part 1)

By Michael Rayel Maria has been feeling depressed for at least two and a half years. About three years ago, her husband of 20 years left her for another woman. Devastated, she became despondent and tearful almost daily. Eventually, her depression got worse associated with inability to function. Her appetite, energy, concentration, and sleep became impaired. She also felt hopeless and suicidal. Her psychiatrist put her on a starting dose of antidepressant. She responded initially but after a few days, she felt just like before taking the medication. For the past two years, Maria has tried four types of antidepressants. She has taken the usual adult doses of these drugs. Although she somewhat improves, she has virtually remained the same depressed and disabled. Maria seems to be taking the medications regularly. But why is she not responding to her antidepressants? Maria is just one of the many depressed individuals who dont feel normal despite treatment. Depression is a treatable disease but how come some people dont do well on medications? There are many reasons why depressed patients like Maria dont improve on antidepressants. First, is the diagnosis correct? Depression can be caused by many clinical entities. Sometimes, knowing the right diagnosis is a challenge. Medical disorders, medications such as beta-blockers and benzodiazepines (e.g. clonazepam), and various psychiatric disorders can cause depression and they all require different treatment. If your doctor fails to identify and treat the true cause of your depression, you will remain depressed despite the use of antidepressant. Second, are there co-morbid disorders? Depression can exist along with other psychiatric disorders such as anxiety disorder, alcohol or drug problems, personality disorder, dementia, and psychosis. Depression will persist if these co-morbid disorders are not treated. For instance, depressive disorder with psychosis cannot be adequately treated just with antidepressant alone. You need an antipsychotic drug added to an antidepressant to treat the illness. Third, is there an ongoing neurological or medical disorder that precipitates, aggravates, or complicates depression? Hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, vitamin B-12 deficiency, pancreatic cancer, brain tumor, Parkinsons disease, and stroke can all cause depression. If any of these disorders are present, antidepressants are less likely to help. The goal in these situations is to treat the underlying medical condition. A 65 year-old lady came to see me complaining of severe depression. On evaluation, she disclosed that she had been on three types of antidepressants for the past four years with minimal response. I checked her recent laboratory results which showed an abnormal thyroid! No wonder, she was not responding to the medication. Fourth, are there ongoing psychosocial issues? Financial problems, family conflict, work-related stress can all precipitate and complicate depression. Despite adequate medication treatment, some individuals will remain depressed especially if such problems are not addressed by the therapist or psychiatrist. Is there any way you can reduce the stressors? Please do so the earliest you can. The treatment of depression is frequently straightforward. Occasionally however, various factors complicate it. For antidepressant to be effective, a psychiatrist should ensure that the diagnosis is correct, that co-morbid psychiatric disorders and medical problems are treated, and that psychosocial issues are adequately addressed. Marias doctor should explore further the real problem and provide the most appropriate intervention. About The Author Copyright 2003. All rights reserved. Dr. Michael G. 10 Critical Tips on How to Hire an Attorney

By Aaron Brooks In the modern world an attorney does more than bail people out of jail. Every business including that of the World Wide Web needs the services of an attorney. But the world is full of attorneys of all kinds and sadly not all are honest. Since a client attorney relationship is based on trust you would need to only appoint an attorney you are comfortable with and are not intimidated by. Another important consideration is what you need an attorney for. Law is a specialized field and you will need to look for an attorney who practices in the area you need help with. Before just selecting an attorney at random it would be advisable to familiarize yourself with the way law works. Many states have websites to guide people. Check out everything before you hire a lawyer. Set yourself a goal to locate a lawyer who you like and trust. One you can confide in and one who will care about what happens to you. A lawyer is in many ways your conscience so choose with care. Think about using a reputed lawyer referral service like this one set up by the Massachusetts Bar Association. The 10 most critical things a lawyer must toe the line for are: 1. He must have the proper qualifications and have extensive experience in the field of law you need him for. You cannot choose a criminal lawyer to handle say a divorce case. 2. He must agree to handle your case himself and not assign you to a colleague or assistant. 3. He must be licensed to work in the area and state or country you need him. 4. He must be honest and upfront with you about the case. If he thinks you have no chance of winning he must say so. 5. He must answer your questions clearly and tell you about not just his successes but failures too. 6. He must be well connected in your area other wise the case will be a damp squib. 7. He must not be loose lipped and discuss salient features of your case at social gatherings. 8. He must lay the cards on the table regarding fees and there should be no hidden charges. 9. His experience should enable him to tell you how long he thinks your case will take and what the strong and weak points of your case are. 10. He must make an effort to listen to you carefully, make notes, read your file thoroughly and not just set the file aside, smile at you and shake your hand within minutes to indicate the meeting is over. What is most essential for you when you step out to hire a lawyer is to do your homework. Ask friends, business colleagues, and others who have ever used a lawyer. Learn how to sift through the chaff and find a lawyer that will suit you most. Do not hire one that charges the lowest fees. Find one that is well qualified, dedicated, and affordable. Why Oprah Is Raving About The Best Life Diet - Discover The Truth About Bob Greene’s Best Life Diet

By Rachel Cohen Every few months there is a new celebrity endorsing the latest and greatest weight loss program that helped them lose weight and the latest is an endorsement by Oprah Winfrey for Bob Greene’s Best Life Diet. While Oprah has hosted a myriad of weight loss experts on her show, Bob Greene is the one who helped her achieve her own dramatic weight loss. From allowing foods that others consider to be forbidden, to addressing emotional and motivational issues behind eating, this diet is definitely turning some heads with its unique approach. This article will examine some of these unique features, as well as the positives and negatives of The Best Life Diet. This diet targets a three phase plan. The first phase which lasts 4 weeks is just focused on developing good habits like eating 3 regular meals, taking vitamins, and increasing exercise activity. Bob claims that building a routine in this phase helps set the foundation for success in the last two phases. The second phase guides you towards making healthier food choices, dealing with hunger, and losing weight more aggressively than the first phase. The last phase of the Best Life Diet is a lifestyle phase that is meant to provide eating and exercise ideas for the rest of your life. Bob Greene takes a more gentle approach with the dieters and rather than imposing a strict regimen, he focuses more on the habits that will stay with you for life. There are no lists of forbidden foods. The focus is all on moderation and you will even find ingredients like white flour in some of the meal plan recipes. This makes the Best Life Diet more realistic to follow and has more chances of success since the reason why most dieters fail is that the diets are too restrictive. While the Best Life Diet does not claim to melt pounds overnight like some fad diets do, it does promise gradual, but lasting success. Anecdotal evidence seems to agree. Since one of the major factors behind diet failure is lack of motivation, the inspiration and motivation provided in this book appears to be the missing link in many of the other diets. Most people like the fact that Bob Greene doesn’t just ask you to change, but also delves into why you should be changing. The success rate is most probably due to this and the fact that changes are small and do-able. When you are looking for a single, effective weight loss solution amongst the sea of “solutions” out there, it can be a difficult choice no matter how many claims of success and endorsements there are. However, common sense says that healthy weight loss is not a magic pill but simple foundational rules. The Best Life Diet works with these simple rules and intertwines them with motivational support and deeper meaning promising you not only weight loss, but a better lifestyle. Rachel Cohen is a burned out dieting fanatic who professionally evaluates the latest diet releases. Her latest website, The Best Life Diet Review, does a more in depth review of the pros and cons of The Best Life Diet. Using Testimonials With Affiliate Marketing

By Brian McElroy Even if your online business is affiliate marketing, i.e. you don’t offer your own products, testimonials can give your bottom line a significant boost. Here’s how. A common way to promote affiliate programs is through the use of a review website, where several products are compared to each other. This can be an effective way to help consumers go the last step and decide between various options. The greatest obstacle you face in converting visitors to sales is how trustworthy and authoritative your site appears to be. Is your contact information readily available? Are you offering your visitors some kind of bonus or extra for purchasing through your site? Are you capturing their name and email address before they leave? If so, you will have ample opportunity to interact with them. Even ONE testimonial about how your recommendation made the buying process easier will go a long way to improving trust in your site. That ONE testimonial will set you apart- because no one else is doing it! If you’re promoting products more based on your own experience, then you have the perfect opportunity to use the power of testimonials to improve your conversions. When you review another product based on a personal narrative, you’re in fact writing a testimonial. How you write it should depend on what market you’re targeting and the characteristics of the consumers in that market. Within the internet marketing niche, for example, consumers tend to have quite a bit of skepticism about the products they are investigating. At the same time, they probably have grand visions of achieving the incomes of the market’s top “gurus.” To connect with them, you should show that you shared their skepticism when initially investigating the product or service yourself. You can only improve your effectiveness by pointing out actual flaws. If you are then able to share a success story, including how you overcame the flaws or initial skepticism, your review will have a strong impact on your visitor. In other niches, buyers may be looking strictly for impartial reviews in an effort to find the best product. In this case, it’s essential to present information in a factual way so as to appear unbiased. General testimonials about the quality of your site and recommendations will probably be more effective than a personal testimonial about the latest MP3 player. Make your testimonials targeted and relevant, and your visitors will reward you! Brian D. One Difference between Law and Politics

By Vicheka Lay To me, education is not just the matter of financial livelihood and social status, but why education is needed? Whether the provided education is authentic, what the lacks or loopholes of education are and to the final stage: would education make the absorbers immortal? These are some of the questions and rhetoric that make me view education very differently from those of my peers and even my parents and lecturers. Law and Politics are usually confused with one another and cannot be meticulously separated from each other; as we usually hear the Faculty of Law and Politics, Center for Political and Legal Tuition, Professor of Law and Politics, etc. These are the facts that initiate me an idea to bring the core difference between Law and Politics and put it on a public display. The core difference would help the student to deeper understand the subject matters. Do you have such the wonder? If no, start to make yourself curious about the core difference between Law and Politics to initiate your mental vocation and if yes, this is an article to unveil you a unique difference between Law and Politics to make you deeply understand. As a student of Law, newspaper columnist, expert author, media liaison officer, legal and political assistant, I have found one complete differences between Law and Politics. This difference is the interpretation. Most students of Law and Politics do not know that the most important theme of their education is the interpretation. Why I dare to say this? Up to the present, we have billions of sources ranking from books and international media publication to the abstract sources, but these so-called information will not make us a true political analyst or lawyer. What we are seeing on these sources is just plain information, so what are these information are. If information is just all about information, University is not needed, because most of these sources are available everywhere and even free. The things that we have not found on these sources are the interpretation or the path to interpretational secretes. Lets now jump up to the very core of our article. Legal interpretation must be within: in interpreting the law, the lawyer of any party or the conflicting parties themselves cannot interpret the law out of the law being enforced in the country where the trial is being heard. This may seem very vague and let us bring an example to clarify. If you commit or are accused of committing a crime in the country in which you are residing in, you or your lawyer are not entitled to interpret the law out of the laws being enforced in your residing country. To a stricter extent, the laws being used for interpretation must circumnavigate the crime that you did or are accused of committing. This case is different from political interpretation. Law and Politics may be equally broad, but interpretation in politics is much broader than in legal one. Have you ever noticed that a political analyst for a university in America would use approach in political interpretation by drawing examples from any country, any sources and any celebrities in the world. Political interpretation (analysis) is not as within as in law. Politics is much more flexible and so much softer than law. Other merits why politics allow much broader interpretation, because we even see a huge similarities between socialist and capitalist states (similar political application), but the laws in these two separate kinds of state are totally different. I know the last one sentence is too vague for you, but lets start the legal and political interpretation. Someone Else

By Nan S. Russell “I’m sorry, but I have to vent. It was a horrible day at work,” began my friend on our monthly catch-up call. “We’ve all been there,” I offered. “Yeah, but not like this.” As a substitute instructional aid, she’d been asked to assist teachers on a field trip for 275 fifth graders to celebrate the successful completion of a testing week. Her bus was the last unloaded and by the time she entered the skating rink, it was chaos. Teachers were standing, arms crossed, griping that no one from the administration was there to organize the event; no one told them what was suppose to happen; and no one had alerted the rink to their coming. While all legitimate concerns, being angry, frustrated and absorbed in their own plight meant no one was dealing with scores of eleven-year-olds rushing to grab skates, ripping open snacks, pushing to get sodas and throwing trash on the floor. “I was utterly horrified,” my friend told me. After watching for several minutes, she decided to recruit a teacher and the two of them began organizing students and assigning tasks to teachers. She did what people who are winning at working do. They act. In twenty years in management, I’ve seen people waiting, watching and hoping someone else would step up, take ownership and make things happen. I’ve seen people stuck in blame-gear while others are doing the work and solving the problems. And I’ve seen people hesitating while others are committing. No surprise these were the same people complaining in my office when others received bigger increases, better assignments, or more interesting projects. You see, people who are winning at working become the someone else that others are waiting for. They step up and do something. They know when to act, and they feel better about themselves when they do. That’s because action feels better than inaction and commitment feels better than non-commitment. Both build your self-esteem. So, here’s my bottom-line: you can’t be winning at working if you’re waiting for someone else to be the someone you could be. In my way of thinking, winning at working means you commit to offering the best you there is. Sometimes that means you have to dig a little deeper for your courage or push yourself outside your comfort zone. Sometimes it means you have to handle 275 out of control children when you’re the lowest ranking person around. But it’s like Shakespeare said, “Nothing comes from doing nothing.” (c) 2005 Nan S.
